CERTIFICATION
Frequently asked questions
No previous Pilates experience is required! Our program is designed to teach you everything from the ground up. Many successful instructors began their Pilates journey with their certification
Mat and Reformer certifications each require one weekend of formal training plus completion of observation, practice, and teaching hours. Most students complete these requirements within 3-6 months.
The Comprehensive certification requires approximately 6 weekends spread over several months, plus completion of all required hours. This is typically completed within 6-12 months.
Mat certification focuses on exercises performed on a mat without equipment. Reformer certification focuses specifically on the reformer apparatus. Comprehensive certification includes all Pilates apparatus (mat, reformer, chair, trapeze table, spine corrector, and ladder barrel) and qualifies you for PMA certification.
Yes! Many instructors teach mat classes with just a Mat certification. While comprehensive certification offers more versatility and the possibility of PMA certification, Mat certification is a great starting point for teaching group classes at fitness centers, gyms, or community centers.
The Pilates Method Alliance (PMA) is the international professional association for Pilates.
Their certification is the industry gold standard and provides international recognition.
Only comprehensive certifications qualify you to take the PMA exam. While not required to teach, PMA certification can open more employment opportunities, especially at high-end studios or in medical settings.
Classical Pilates follows the original sequence and exercises created by Joseph Pilates, often taught in a set order with minimal variation. It’s structured and consistent—some describe it as a system the body grows into. Our program follows the Contemporary approach, which builds on those foundations but adapts to modern science, biomechanics, and the individual. We modify and customize based on the body in front of us—honoring the method while making it more accessible and sustainable for all bodies. Both methods have lots of merit, they are just different approaches.
